Enjoy two days of calligraphic exploration with former White House chief calligrapher, Rick Paulus, as he gently introduces the finer details and mechanics of America’s most popular script hand, Spencerian Script. Once a staple of business writing, this elegant, nature-inspired hand is enjoying a lively rennaissance in response to digital influence on today’s design. If you are new to picking up a pointed pen, Rick will give you a solid instructional beginning to this beautiful style of cursive handwriting that Americans used from the 1840s to the 1920s. For the experienced calligrapher, Rick willl bring you back to the basics and refresh and hone your skills to polish your script to perfection.

Rick Paulus has enjoyed being a student, practitioner, and teacher of calligraphy for over forty years. As an ap- prentice at the famous Tolley Studios in Washington, DC, Rick was introduced early on to pointed-pen hands, and has utilized them extensively in his over thirty years as a professional calligrapher. In 1993, Rick studied Spencerian Script under the tutelage of Michael Sull, the modern father of Spencerian Script. While serving as chief calligrapher of the White House, Rick introduced the use of Spencerian Script on invitations, menus and place cards, showcasing this uniquely American hand at the highest levels of entertaining. Today, he still finds plenty of occasion to utilize this elegant hand while experimenting with letters in his studio on the shores of Cape Cod.
